1997 LICKING COUNTY HOUSING FORUM: Recent Facts About Housing Needs
From the Licking County Community Needs Assessment
Conducted March-July, 1997
- Licking County residents who use social and human service agencies have greater housing needs than general citizens who infrequently use these services.
- The entire 1,011 sample of citizens and agency clients perceived housing as the seventh most serious problem facing families in the next few years in this county, however, housing was the fourth most frequently mentioned problem for all clients (N =414), and:
- Housing was the second most serious problem for those clients who reside in Newark and the central part of the county;
- And housing was the #2 ranked problem for residents and clients who live in the Buckeye Lake or southeastern part of the county.
- It was perceived as one of the top "very serious needs" for young clients aged 14 to 25, and mentioned as a "serious need" by middle-aged and older clients.
- Licking County residents described the type of housing needs as: the need for improved availability of three bedroom apartments and upgrading of many rental units that currently are of poor quality, wood stock;
- and they also said there was a need for building of affordable single family homes with governmental assistance and private non-profit help (e.g. Habitat for Humanity).
- Transitional housing was mentioned as a need from those in the county jail who had long-term substance abuse (alcohol) problems and most of those citing this need were single/divorced/separated men.
